AI for Earth, 2023 in Review

2020 was a year of change and growth for AI for Earth, an initiative from Microsoft that focuses on using artificial intelligence to help protect the environment. In 2021, the program continued to grow as it expanded its reach and scope. The initiative developed new tools and resources to help support environmental projects and initiatives around the world. By 2023, AI for Earth had made tremendous progress in its mission to bring together world-leading research, technology, and data to benefit the environment.

The program developed several new tools and resources, including the public AI for Earth platform which provides access to datasets, machine learning models, and tutorials. The platform allows researchers and developers to discover and use AI-powered resources to help conserve natural resources and reduce emissions. Additionally, AI for Earth launched several new projects to help support environmental initiatives such as soil health and water conservation.

AI for Earth also developed powerful collaborations with other organizations to ensure sustainable development initiatives are successful. Collaborations with government agencies, NGOs, private businesses, and universities have enabled AI for Earth to deliver projects with greater potential impact. For instance, the partnership between Microsoft and Rio de Janeiro’s Department of Water and Sewerage enabled AI for Earth to develop an AI-based system that successfully detects sewage leaks in Brazil’s capital city.

AI for Earth also provided technical assistance to governments and municipalities across the planet to help them develop policies and strategies to meet their environmental objectives. Through this effort, AI for Earth helped shape the Paris Agreement and other climate initiatives, resulting in improved air quality, reduced waste, and increased access to clean energy.
