The article, “A Study on the Impact of Information Literacy on Student Academic Performance in Higher Education”, published in the journal Educational Technology & Society in 2021, discusses the importance of information literacy in the academic success of students pursuing higher education.
The study was conducted with 778 undergraduate students from two universities in Spain and aimed to analyze the impact of information literacy on the academic performance of students in higher education. The results obtained suggest that information literacy has a positive influence on student academic performance.
In order to measure the level of information literacy, the researchers used a survey composed of four domains: (1) searching for information; (2) managing and evaluating information; (3) creating and using information; and (4) understanding information technologies.
The results revealed a significant correlation between information literacy and academic performance. Specifically, higher scores in information literacy were associated with higher marks in exams, course completion rate, number of publications, as well as research involvement.
The authors concluded that information literacy is an important factor in the academic success of higher education students. They suggest that universities should provide students with the necessary resources and training to learn and develop their information literacy skills.
Overall, this study provides evidence to suggest that information literacy is essential for achieving successful academic outcomes in higher education. The findings also indicate that universities should focus on providing appropriate resources to their students to improve their information literacy skills. This is key to helping them become more successful in their studies and future careers.
