Responsible AI at Google Research: Context in AI Research (CAIR)
Google Research has committed to responsible AI with the launch of their Responsible AI at Google Research initiative. This initiative seeks to ensure that AI products and services understand and respect the needs of people, maintain fairness, value privacy, and stay accountable. It is part of the broader Google AI Principles which are based on ethical principles from a wide variety of sources such as legal frameworks and professional codes of conduct.
The Responsible AI at Google Research initiative includes three key components. First, it promotes the development of responsible AI practices within Google Research. Second, it sets up guidelines for development and implementation of AI systems. Third, it ensures that third-party stakeholders are actively involved in the development and use of Google’s AI technologies.
At the heart of the initiative lies the need to build trust between Google and its users. Therefore, Google has put in place a number of measures to ensure fairness, privacy and accountability when using its AI systems. For instance, they have introduced processes such as bias detection, auditability, fairness assessment and privacy reviews to ensure that all their AI models are fair, accurate and respectful of human rights.
Additionally, Google has partnered with the Partnership on AI to ensure that external stakeholders such as civil society organizations, academics and industry groups are actively engaged in the development and use of Google AI products. Through this partnership, Google hopes to ensure the interoperability and transparency of its AI systems.
Finally, Google is also creating an AI Safety team which will focus on developing safety policies and procedures to keep its AI systems safe, secure and reliable. The team will also monitor the use of AI by both internal and external customers.
Overall, Google Research's Responsible AI at Google Research initiative is an important step towards building trust and keeping AI systems safe, secure and reliable. By introducing processes such as bias detection, auditability, fairness assessment and privacy reviews, Google is ensuring that all their AI models are fair, accurate and respectful of human rights. Furthermore, by partnering with the Partnership on AI, they are making sure that external stakeholders are actively involved in the development and use of their AI technologies. These measures lay the groundwork for responsible AI development and usage.
